OUR OFFERING

Writing Scripts for User Acceptance Testing (UAT)

Writing clear and structured test scripts is a critical part of a successful ERP User Acceptance Testing (UAT) phase. Well-designed scripts help testers follow consistent processes, validate system functionality accurately, and identify issues before go-live. Without properly written scripts, testing can become inconsistent, difficult to track, and less effective.

One of five courses offered as part of our Internal Upskill Training offering, we deliver an expert-led UAT Script Writing for ERP training course that helps organisations prepare their teams for the testing phase of an ERP implementation. Our structured approach ensures delegates understand how to translate business processes into clear, repeatable test scripts that support effective testing.

The course begins with an overview of UAT, explaining the purpose of testing, the role of the tester, and why well-written scripts are essential for quality, consistency, and auditability. Delegates then learn how to structure test scripts effectively, including defining the purpose, documenting preconditions and master data requirements, recording step-by-step actions, and capturing expected and actual results.

A key focus of the training is helping users break down ERP business processes into clear, testable steps. Delegates also explore best practices for writing concise, actionable instructions, capturing navigation paths, defining measurable outcomes, and ensuring consistent terminology throughout the script.

Delivered either virtually or in a face-to-face classroom setting, the session is led by an experienced Optimum consultant and includes practical exercises using the ERP environment, Microsoft Office tools, and testing platforms such as Azure DevOps.

By leveraging Optimum’s expertise, organisations can ensure their teams produce clear, consistent UAT scripts that support a more structured testing phase and a smoother ERP implementation.

WHAT'S COVERED?

Course Content

Below is an overview of the topics covered within this half-day course.

What is UAT?; Why do scripts matter (quality, consistency, auditability)?; The role of the tester (executing processes, logging results, reporting defects).

Purpose; Preconditions; Master data prerequisites; Step by step actions; Expected results; Actual results; Pass/Fail; Defect reference.

Identifying the process scope (start trigger → end outcome); Determining which variations require separate scripts; How SMEs/testers decide what “good” looks like.

Writing style: imperative, concise, and unambiguous; Referencing fields, buttons, and system actions consistently; Avoiding assumptions, jargon, and missing steps; Capturing navigation (menu path, workspace, form); Including expected results in measurable terms (status changes, document numbers, validation messages); When to include screenshots and when not to.

How to record Pass/Fail Result; When to raise a defect; how to reference it; What qualifies as a functional issue vs. tester error.

Missing master data setup; Combining multiple processes in one script; Not documenting expected results clearly; Using inconsistent terminology; Forgetting negative/exception paths.
